SIA I2, in collaboration with the Forest Sector Competence Centre (SIA “Meža nozares kompetences centrs”), is implementing a research project titled “Development and Study of a Sustainable High-Energy-Efficiency Construction System for Residential Buildings.” The research is carried out within the European Union Recovery Fund investment project “Forest Sector Competence Centre” No. 1.2.1.2.i.2/1/24/A/CFLA/001.
Research Objective
To develop and study a new, innovative construction system for single-family residential buildings. The system is designed for industrial-scale serial production, where components are manufactured off-site, delivered to the construction site, and assembled until the building is ready for use. This innovative construction system will enable faster building processes with high energy-efficiency performance, using wood and wood-based materials to increase added value.
Implementation Period
01/2025 – 12/2026
The research will explore the advantages of the innovative construction system:
- Climate-neutral construction – special focus is placed on using wood as a raw material. Life cycle analysis is applied to carefully select the materials and technologies used;
- Energy efficiency – the design of the system follows Passive House Institute guidelines and energy performance targets, exceeding national regulations in Latvia by a factor of three;
- Economically viable solutions – the system is designed to optimize the transportation of components, reduce construction time, and integrate building systems efficiently.
The research will be conducted in several reporting phases:
- Industrial research – detailed product concept with expected performance characteristics;
- Industrial research – result report; component testing, various joint types (e.g., I-beam, window box), structural part of the model; Smartwin window fire resistance – EI30 certification and burn test;
- Industrial research – result report; sound insulation tests for doors and windows;
- Experimental development – report on full-scale prototype execution and process performance; measurement data report;
- Experimental development – measurement report; two scientific publications to be submitted for publication in at least two indexed journals in Web of Science, SCOPUS, ScienceDirect, or Elsevier databases.
